Eighteen

They rushed back over to the shop and got there in less than three minutes. The person must have been scared away by the alarm, but not before they had broken the glass on the front door, reached a hand through, and unlocked it. Then, they had thrown jimsonweed all over the floor. The words, ‘Back Off’ were written on the glass window with a black sharpie.

Lilith rushed to the backroom where Emily and the cats were waiting. Emily had seen Lilith and Josiah arrive on the computer that was hooked up to the shop cameras.

“Are you okay?” Lilith asked, the panic evident in her voice.

“We’re fine,” Emily said.

Josiah had called for the forensic team to come, take pictures, and do whatever else that they did when there was a crime scene.

They looked at the camera footage and saw someone dressed from head to toe in black. The face was covered with a balaclava and the person was wearing gloves and sunglasses to further hide their identity. The only thing that they could tell about the person was that they were the same height as the person who left a bouquet of jimsonweed on Lilith’s front porch had likely done this deed. The person was medium height and medium build. This meant that it could be a man or a woman.

“This is the bad thing about true crime shows. It teaches people to get away with stuff,” Lilith said.

“You like true crime shows,” Emily replied. “You’re probably the reason that some of them keep going.”

“I can’t argue with you on that one,” Lilith said.

“Are you going to start going through front doors like you were going through vehicles, now?” Emily asked.

“I hope not,” Lilith replied. “I can’t afford to be paying insurance that kind of thing.”

Josiah called a company who said that they would be right over to fix the door.

“Look who’s getting to know people in Casper,” Lilith said.

“I helped them out when their son was busted for something very minor. I scared the snot out of the kid and talked to the DA about letting the kid plead so that he would only get community service and probation. He is a really great kid and just got caught up in the wrong crowd,” he said. “They own the shop that I called.

“Nice work, Detective,” Lilith said. “I’ll take favors any day, as long as they aren’t bribes.”

Lilith called Tamara to let her know what was going on.

“She’s safe. She was locked up in the workroom with the cats. The person likely didn’t even know that she was in there,” Lilith said.

“If I was saying this to anyone but you, it would sound terrible. However, this doesn’t bother me in the least. There is no mundane in the world who could take down Emily and her two side kicks. Not even Chuck Norris could get close enough to do one of his kicks,” Tamara said. “The only person who’s a threat to Emily is that wicked witch. And even then, Emily and the cats would give her a run for her money.
